Why you should never store your glasses upside down - as it could do more harm than good

A TikTok star has gone viral after showing their followers why they should never store glasses upside down in their cupboards or on shelves.

In a video that has garnered a staggering 3.6 million views and 128,000 likes so far, user @Bs.hidden.secrets has divided the internet with his latest kitchen hack.

According to the popular TikToker, who has accumulated a following of more than 76,000 people, storing glasses upside down means all of the weight is being carried by the rim - which they describe as the 'most fragile part' of the glass.

"Over time the glass is more likely to break," they explain.

Some agreed with the TikTok star's advice, with one person saying it's "disgusting to store the part you drink from on the surface" due to it collecting dust.

However, the majority of users criticised the video and joked that you simply needed to buy 'stronger' glasses.

One user wrote: "I have always stored them upside down. [I've] NEVER had an issue".

"I've never had a glass break in 50 years," another person wrote.

"I store them upside down to prevent dust from collecting in the glass... They break, you buy more," a third added.

Culinary producer Clare Langan told marthastewart.com that there is no 'wrong way' to arrange your glasses, with different methods suiting different people's kitchens.

However, the home cooking expert recommends "storing lesser-used mugs rim side down to prevent dust from collecting".

When it comes to more delicate and special-occasion glassware, such as champagne flutes or wine glasses, Langan says it's "typically safer" for them to be stored upright.

She adds : "If you're worried about the dust issue for longer storage or open shelving (think bar carts) carefully store them rim side down."

When it comes to thicker tumbler style glasses - Langan says it's safe to stack them on top of each other - which may also help prevent dust and also helps save space.
