Why you should never leave hand sanitiser in your car - with potentially big risks

As we try our best to avoid the spread of coronavirus, many of us have opted to carry around hand sanitiser with us.

From trips to the shops to exercise in the park, it's difficult to think of an occasion now where hand sanitiser wouldn't home in useful.

As a result, an increasing number of people are keeping a bottle of the stuff in their cars - sounds like common sense, right?

According to  RSVP Live, this might not be true.

FGCU Associate Professor Dr Greg Boyce told  Drivetribe  that this is not a good idea. With the weather getting warmer, rising temperatures can cause the alcohol in the sanitiser to evaporate.

The temperature inside a car, especially if it is parked in direct sunlight, can climb to scorching heights quickly.

As alcohol is the active ingredient that's killing bacteria and  viruses, the product won't be able to provide the level of protection it's supposed to.

You should make sure you aren't applying warm sanitiser to your hands as it can irritate your skin.

The site  Love to Know  also explains that hand sanitiser can be a fire hazard.

"Most hand sanitiser products contain a high volume of alcohol, which is the reason for hand sanitizer fire hazard concerns," they explain.

"Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are classified as Class I Flammable Liquid substances, which means they have a flash point of less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should be stored away from all heat and ignition sources, including (but not limited to) sparks; open flames; any types of electrical outlets, switches or equipment; and extreme heat."

Finally, hand sanitiser can actually damage your car, causing the interiors to wear down prematurely.

An article on the site  Motoring Research  says: "Disposable gloves may remove the need for hand sanistiser and protect your car into the bargain. Just remember to throw them away immediately after use.

"At all times, prioritise your safety – and that of others – over the condition of your car."
