Why you should never drink coffee first thing in the morning, according to TikTok doctor

A doctor is warning people against drinking coffee first thing in the morning.

Dr Karan Raj, famed for sharing health tips on TikTok, spoke about the issue on BBC Morning Live.

"Don't drink coffee first thing in the morning to wake you up," he said, in a clip which was later shared to his TikTok. "Your body naturally wakes you up with cortisol, you get a cortisol spike in the morning."

Instead, Dr Raj suggests saving that caffeine hit until later in the morning, once those natural cortisol levels reduce and you're left with a little energy slump, reports The Mirror.

"Save your coffee until mid-morning when your cortisol levels and your energy levels dip so you get a caffeine boost then and it'll be better," he said.

However, Karan's TikTok followers were left divided, with many commenting that they couldn't possibly imagine being able to get on with their day without a fix.

"Aw hell no, gotta have coffee first thing in the morning or we can't be friends," one TikTok user wrote, while another added: "Can I have a coffee first thing AND mid-morning as a compromise?"

Meanwhile, a third joked: "I must have a cortisol deficiency, because it takes me at least half an hour to wake up every morning."

That being said, one user did comment to say they'd put the advice to the test a week ago and said they felt great.
