Why you might hear your neighbours clapping in Bristol tonight

Bristol residents have been urged to get out on their doorsteps tonight (Tuesday) and cheer for the dedicated colleagues and volunteers working to help the homeless.

Applause has been ringing out around the UK every Thursday night since lockdown began, becoming a highlight of the week for many people isolating in their homes.

The weekly Clap for Carers initiative celebrates NHS staff and key workers, but there are also many others who deserve recognition for their work during lockdown.

Bristol Homeless Action Week has organised tonight's one-off 'Chuesday Cheer', as a show of appreciation for people working to help the city's homeless population.

It wants people to cheer and make noise for five minutes from 8pm, and has encouraged supporters to send videos and pictures via social media to document the moment.

Alexandra Mills, a team member at Bristol Homeless Action Week, said: "People have been working 24/7 for weeks [to help the homeless] and this seems like the right time to give them a little bit of a pick-me-up and say thank you."

She said it is "highly likely" that there will be an increase in people facing homelessness after the pandemic, with people struggling to pay rent due to job losses and lack of business.

Bristol City Council has put up hundreds of rough sleepers in hotels and self-contained accommodation to allow them to self-isolate during the pandemic, but there are still thought to be more than 100 on the streets.

Many charities are running with a limited number of staff and volunteers due to people self-isolating, meaning that those who are able to help are working even harder than usual to run services and offer support.

This week was supposed to be Bristol Homeless Action Week, featuring events and activities to celebrate homelessness services.

It had to be postponed due to the pandemic and 'Chuesday Cheer' was organised to ensure charities and volunteers still get recognition.
