Why you may have seen an NHS demonstration on the A52

A group campaigning against the privatisation of the NHS took part in a peaceful demonstration on the A52 to emphasise "clapping is not enough".

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire branch of the Keep Our NHS Public group took to Bramcote Island on the A52 at around 4pm on Friday, July 3.

Their goal was to raise awareness for their cause, particularly as the NHS celebrates the 72nd anniversary of its post-war founding over the weekend.

Keep Our NHS Public has been heavily involved in campaigns across the country against the offering of more and more healthcare services to the private sector.

The group last year welcomed new guidelines, established by Nottingham City Council, whereby health bosses will decide whether NHS contracts are offered to the private sector and if in-house arrangements provide good value for money and good care.

But the group is now protesting again following 10 weeks of 'clap for our carers' events which took place on Thursday evenings at the start of lockdown.

Mike Scott, of Keep Our NHS Public, said this is because through "the facade of unity" the Government has continued to privatise some services.

In December last year the Mirror reported £15billion of services had been sold off in the past five years.

Speaking of the demonstration, he added: "This really must have been the most popular demonstration I've ever been on.

"People going past were hooting and waving continuously. It was everyone old and young, black and white, cars, vans and lorries.

"All the KONP members we were expecting came, despite the terrible weather and it was good to be on the road leading to the QMC, opposite Broxtowe Borough Council’s NHS flowerbed.

"You can see that our message has struck home – people really care about the NHS and will defend it from creeping privatisation.

"I’m just sorry that Government ministers weren't there to see for themselves."
