Why you may have seen a huge RAF aircraft flying over Nottinghamshire

A large RAF aircraft was seen passing over Nottinghamshire on Wednesday, May 13, as part of an essential training exercise.

The C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, a long-range transporter which is typically used in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions across the world, passed over the county after travelling north from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Photographer Christopher Frost captured the aircraft on his mobile phone as it quickly flew over Beeston at around 2.30pm on Wednesday, May 13.

The exact route of the transporter is not made available to the public, but it had taken off from Brize Norton - the largest RAF station in the country - and flown in the vicinity of the East Midlands, as shown on FlightRadar24.

The station is home to the RAF's Strategic and Tactical Air Transport (AT) and Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) forces, as well as host to many lodger and reserve units.

RAF Brize Norton had said: "This afternoon, our C-17 Globemaster aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of East Midlands, whilst engaged in essential training.

"These are necessary, routine, flights and not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against coronavirus."

The C-17 can transport more than 45,000kg of freight and weighs around 128,100kg itself.

The RAF says C-17s are regular visitors to allied forward bases, particularly in connection with French anti-terrorist work in Africa.
