Why West Bromwich Albion and Rangers need to be aware of controversial Liverpool transfer policy that cost Bristol City

West Bromwich Albion and Rangers have reportedly lined up moves for Liverpool's Ben Woodburn.

The 19-year-old was recalled in January from an underwhelming loan spell at Sheffield United in the first half of the season, which saw him make just seven league appearances - the last of which came in early November.

It could well see the Blades land a similar punishment to one Bristol City received last season, and it is something the Baggies and the Gers should be aware of before targeting summer loan moves for Woodburn.

Last season saw the Robins take winger Ryan Kent on loan in the second half of the season.

Big things were expected from the player, who had started the season on loan at Freiburg in the Bundesliga, but he failed to deliver, making just 10 appearances for the Robins.

City manager Lee Johnson admitted the loan had not worked out how any party really intended it to.

He explained: "Ryan hasn’t done it to how we would have hoped in our team for whatever reason.

"He came into a club with big expectations and for whatever reason it hasn’t quite worked as we would have all hoped."

Leeds United join Bristol City and Reading in race for bargain League Two hotshot formerly of Birmingham City

He added: "The squad understands each other and has cohesion with each other, its not always easy to break into that scenario."

The Robins ended up receiving a fine from Liverpool for failing to play him in enough games - an estimated £200,000.

Whether the same punishment has befallen Sheffield United is unclear, but it may be worth the Baggies bearing the Robins' fate in mind before deciding whether to move for Woodburn or not.
