Why were trains delayed at Newcastle Central Station today?

A woman has been taken to hospital in Newcastle following an incident at Central Station on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of an incident on the line at around 11.30am on Sunday.

A number of rail services were impacted and there were long delays which were exacerbated by people travelling to and from the Great North Run.

Services affected were:

  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Plymouth
  • LNER between Aberdeen and London Kings Cross
  • Northern between Carlisle and Nunthorpe, and between Morpeth and Metro Centre
  • TransPennine Express between Edinburgh / Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said:

"We were called out just before 11am to a report of a female injured at Central Station in Newcastle. We dispatched one ambulance crew and transported the patient to the RVI."

Emergency services have confirmed a woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital earlier after being injured at an emergency incident at Newcastle Central Station.

LNER warned of some disruption on the line affecting trains at Newcastle after the emergency services had departed, lasting until around 2pm.
