In our recently posted NFL Wire network mock draft, Colts Wire’s pick at No. 15 overall turned out to be Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.
With Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold off the board, the decision wasn’t an easy one. We decided to go with Bowers, but we also considered Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse.
Bowers was ultimately the choice, though, because of how he would fit within the Colts offense as an explosive weapon for head coach Shane Steichen to use.
While positional value should be taken into account during the first round, Bowers is more offensive weapon than he is a traditional tight end. The Colts likely wouldn’t use him often as a blocker, but they instead would highlight his skills as a receiver.
Having Michael Pittman Jr. on the outside, Josh Downs in the slot and Bowers lining up all over the formation would give the Colts a significantly explosive trio of receiving options for young quarterback Anthony Richardson to work with.
Not to mention, defenses would be extremely stressed considering how often the Colts use RPO concepts. Between the rushing abilities of Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor, the passing lanes would be open often for Bowers, Pittman and Downs.
Bowers understands how to set up defenders on crossing and seam routes, and his abilities with the ball in his hands give him the potential to transform any offense.
The Colts should have their share of strong options at No. 15 overall, and Bowers very well may be at the top of the list when the end of April arrives.
