Why we're doing 10:10

What made you sign up? Franny Armstrong
Do you know your carbon footprint? No, but it’s not good.
Tell us your guiltiest green secret? I have a list of sins that which too long for this page.
If you could sign anyone in the world up to 10:10, who would that be? I have neighbours who still don’t believe climate change is caused by human

What made you sign up? I think any group that persuades politicians to get a grip is a good thing. I have already cut down a lot, so it will push me to look at other things that I can do.
Tell us your guiltiest green secret? It’s probably baths. I take two a day. It relaxes my back, so it is medicinal in part. It used to only be one, but it has crept up. I can probably turn one into a shower.

What are going to be the easiest things to change about your lifestyle? I am hoping there will be lots of little tweaks – like 80s draught excluders. I’m not too bad with turning off the lights as I grew up with the saying, “It’s not Blackpool illuminations you know,” but I need to work out the timer on the central heating. When we moved into the house, I really wanted to put solar panels up. But I was made to feel I was being unrealistic, impractical. There need to be incentives to get people to do things like that.
If I could sign anyone in the world up to 1010 . . . It would be Simon Cowell. Did you see The X Factor? If he’s not in a Bentley, he’s in a speed boat or a private jet. I think it would be better if all the judges arrived sharing a rickshaw.

By signing up to 10:10, I hope people will send a broader message to governments round the world. They need to agree a global deal at Copenhagen that is ambitious in cutting emissions, fair to developing countries and effective in holding countries to their word. I’m pledging to do my bit in my own life and I’m also pledging to try to get that deal at Copenhagen. If you agree, while you’re signing up to 10:10 you can join me by signing the pledge for a global deal at edspledge.com.

What are going to be the easiest things to change about your lifestyle? I can cut down one flight in 10, that should go a long way to meeting my target. That’s not going to be hard – who in their right mind would want to travel by plane? You have to eat that awful processed food with plastic forks and spoons, and you get treated like a cross between a stupid child and a sheep. I was in Marrakech the other day, and my friend had arrived by train – a three-day journey. I absolutely wouldn’t mind doing that.

What made you sign up for 10:10? The urgency of the situation, and having a collective action seemed an exciting way of dealing with it. And it’s a good opportunity for me to look at how green I actually am. I think I am, but it’s easy to be complacent.
Do you know what your carbon footprint is? I don’t. I’ve never tried to work it out. I will now though, and I’m probably going to be horrified by it.
Tell us your guiltiest green secret? I’m pretty ignorant about the issues. We all have a sense of what is going on because it’s in the ether, but there’s a risk that we don’t see it properly.
If I could sign anyone in the world up to 10:10 it would be . . . My mum and dad. They seem like representative consumers. Fairly wasteful but always receptive to new ideas.

What made you sign up for 10:10? Guilt. Having just done a tour around the world following the Queen, I don’t know how many thousands of air miles I must have travelled, but it was a lot. And I drive a four-by-four. My children and wife are always telling me that it’s disgusting, so when I sent them the 10:10 email to ask them if I should sign up, they all said they would disown me if I didn’t. I spend very little time thinking about the environment and I feel very bad about that. I have been challenging social justice for years and never thinking to make the link to environmental justice.
Do you know what your carbon footprint is? Absolutely not. It’s a bit like looking at your bank account when you’re overdrawn. You just don’t want to think about it. I figure it’s high.

Where is the greenest place you have ever visited? My home town – Melbourne. Everyone around there is aware of the importance of climate change. Even back in the 90s, the people were recycling their trash and so on. I think there are laws that keep you from going over the top. Laws such as putting a brick in your cistern . . . I guess maybe because it has affected Australia more than anywhere else. In fact, the half-flush was invented in Australia.

What’s the most important thing the government could do? I think they should do a really provocative campaign and it has to be on constantly. They’ve done them for smoking, for drink driving . . . and it does make you much more aware. Those other ads just didn’t go away. It needs every generation seeing it – it has to be something that is just in the psyche.

Do you know your carbon footprint? No. The thought of calculating it makes me anxious – first the maths, then the embarrassment.
Tell us your guiltiest green secret? I keep leaving lights on.
What will be the easiest things to change? In theory, turning off the lights . . .
And the hardest? Avoiding hypocrisy is always hard

What are going to be the easiest things to change about your lifestyle? Changing lightbulbs; turning the heating down and putting on a jumper.
What are going to be the hardest? Driving less – it’s much easier to transport a bunch of energetic children when they’re strapped down.

10:10 pledgers: Kevin McCloud, designer and television presenter

If I could sign anyone in the world up to 1010 . . . I think if it’s not going to be Jeremy Clarkson, it’s the Pope. He’s responsible for the ethical position of tens of millions of people worldwide. And responsible for millions flying to see him in St Peter’s Square. He should be encouraging all those nuns to quit the plane and make the pilgrimage on foot.
What’s the most important thing the government could do? The only way to deal with the issue (and this isn’t a popular, vote-winning idea in government) is through cultural change across every aspect of our society. Some of the changes will be easy and accessible, but in 15 years’ time, say, when we have to reduce by another 20-30%, it’s going to be hard. We’re going to need to reassess the value of every single thing we do.

What made you sign up for 10:10? Because I have children, and hope to have grandchildren, and I want them to live in a planet that hasn’t been destroyed. I think it’s a great idea – though it is a challenging one.
Do you know what your carbon footprint is? No – but I do drive quite a lot, and I go to Cairo quite often, and I have to fly for that. However, I have been trying to reduce as much as possible.
