'Why we all need a bit of summer sun in our lives'

WE are all sleeping in our underwear (or less!), leaving windows ajar with a keen eye on security, and keeping fans on all night.

Don’t you just love this heatwave? Don’t you just adore waking up to the sun and a smile on your face?

Don’t you just cherish the chance to take long walks, eat alfresco on balmy summer nights, and bake in your much-needed vitamin D?

We at Chez Lewis couldn’t afford to get away this summer and, in some ways, thank God given the chaos at the airports, the exorbitant prices for flights and hotels, and the Covid crisis which continues to wreak havoc.

Yet we’ve still managed to enjoy a staycation, visit friends and dine out. There is much to be said for spending time together as a family rather than money.

Some friends have signed up to gym clubs with spas and pools to make the most of being home away from home without the expense of jetting off.

There is enough time during the latter part of the year to dig out the duffel coats and be sucked into the gloom of those dark November evenings.

We’d already spent the first half of the year wondering where the sun had gone. Now that it has its hat on, for some folk it is too much.

In some cases, of course, you can see why. Many supermarkets have long since run out of fans amid a stampede. They’ve also stopped selling disposable barbecues because there are far too many inconsiderate souls incapable of appreciating the fire hazards they create.

I feel for my wife and kids with hayfever – yours too – at this time. And we’ve all been well aware of the fact that we’re knee-deep in a climate emergency long before this summer.

Now hosepipe bans and other water restrictions have been imposed by water boards to grapple with dwindling water levels at reservoirs.

It most certainly isn’t fun in the sun for everyone. But with so much to concern us around the country and the world right now, I’m grateful for those small mercies.
