Wayne Routledge could yet pull on a Swansea City shirt again, despite being officially released by the club.
The experienced winger is to run down his current deal at the Liberty Stadium and become a free agent this summer, despite previously indicating that he would like to stay.
Speaking about his future last month, Routledge said: "Hopefully with a bit of luck we can sort something out.
"I've been here a long time and I've got my family here. I'm sure we'll have talks and see what can be done."
However, a deal has not been finalised and Routledge is now no longer a Swansea player - at least for the time being.
Swansea City star's cryptic tweet has left fans concerned amid Brighton interest in Graham Potter
WalesOnline understands a fresh approach could yet be made to keep the player in South Wales later in the summer, but the club are keen to assess their financial situation first.
The uncertainty over the future of current boss Graham Potter, who remains a number one target for Brighton and Hove Albion following the sacking of Chris Hughton, is also likely to be a factor, but it's believed that any move is likely to mainly depend on the outgoings that Swansea can secure.
The full Swansea City retained list as captain Leroy Fer and other big names leave the club of captain Leroy Fer, Martin Olsson, Luciano Narsingh and Wilfried Bony, all of whom have also seen their deals expire, will already free up some much needed funds, but the club are still looking to move on the likes of the Ayew brothers and Borja Baston.
The Swans hierarchy are working hard to move all of them on, but there is nothing in the pipeline at this stage.
There could, of course, also be money raised from the potential sale of Daniel James.
Although Manchester United haven't made contact over a move, they remain heavily-linked with the young winger, with some reports pointing to a price tag of £15-20million.
No matter how it happens, should the Swans get their finances in order, there's a strong suggestion that they could well reopen talks with Routledge, who remains a popular figure within the club.
However, there is an acknowledgement within the club that allowing the 34-year old to run down his contract could prove a gamble, with the former Crystal Palace star expected to attract admiring glances from elsewhere, although there doesn't appear to be any offers on the table at this stage.
