Why wasn't Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh king?

The Duke of Edinburgh – also known as Prince Philip - has died, the Royal Family announced.

He had been an established part of the monarchy for decades.

He married the Queen - then Princess Elizabeth - more than 70 years ago.

Around 10 years after they married, Queen Elizabeth officially named him prince, but he never became king.

On February 22, 1957 the palace issued a statement saying: “The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm bearing date 22nd February, 1957, to give and grant unto His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T., G.B.E., the style and titular dignity of a Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Whitehall.

“The Queen has been pleased to declare her will and pleasure that His 'Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh shall henceforth be known as His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”

But why didn't he become king following their marriage?

There's a pretty simple reason, according to The Mirror.

If the reigning monarch is female her husband can’t be called king, as it would mean he’d out rank her.

However, the wife of a British monarch is given the title of queen.

Elizabeth’s mother became queen because her husband was King George VI for example.

The Duchess of Cambridge will most likely be Queen Catherine when William becomes King.

The announcement about Prince Philip's death was made by The Royal Family on Friday.

In a tweet, they said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

" His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
