Why was The Jeremy Kyle Show cancelled? ITV axe show following death of Steve Dymond

It has been confirmed that The Jeremy Kyle Show has been permanently axed and will not return to our screens.

The talk show has always been controversial, but was one of the channel's most popular programmes.

All episodes of the show have been removed from the ITV Hub, and the page that has all the details on how to apply has been taken down from the ITV website.

When did the show start?

The show has been on our screens for nearly 15 years after starting in July 2005.

Since then it has been broadcast on ITV1 at 9:25am every weekday morning and often repeats shown on ITV2 during the afternoon.

The show would see host, Jeremy Kyle, confront people about their family issues such as drug and alcohol problems, infidelity and lies.

Why was The Jeremy Kyle Show cancelled?

The show was axed from ITV following the death of Steve Dymond who was found dead at a house in Grafton St, Portsmouth, on May 9.

He died just days after filming an episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show in their Manchester studios.

Viewers tuning into the show on Monday, May 13 were surprised to see Dickinson's Real Deal instead of Jeremy Kyle.

ITV then released a statement which said: “Everyone is shocked and saddened at the news of the death of a participant in the show.

“ITV will not screen the episode in which they featured. ITV has also decided to suspend both filming and broadcasting of The Jeremy Kyle Show with immediate effect in order to give it time to conduct a review of this.”

Its future in the balance, reports from Mr Dymond's family said that he told them the host 'really laid into him'.

On Wednesday, May 15, it was confirmed that The Jeremy Kyle Show would not be returning to ITV.

What did ITV bosses say?

In a statement released today, CEO Carolyn McCall said it was "the right time for the show to end".

She said: "Given the gravity of the recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

"The Jeremy Kyle Show has had a loyal audience and has been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but now is the right time for the show to end.

"Everyone at ITV's thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friend of Steve Dymond."

What as Jeremy Kyle said?

The host himself has not released a statement since the show was taken off air on Monday, May 13.

Kyle was filmed near his home in Windsor on Wednesday, although is yet to comment personally.

What about Ofcom?

The UK's communications regulator, Ofcom confirmed they were speaking with the channel, saying: "This is clearly a very distressing case.

"Although we can only assess content that has been broadcast, we are discussing this programme with ITV as a priority to understand what took place."
