Why was Melbourne fruiterer Paul Virgona gunned down on his way to work?

Paul Virgona's family business supplied fruit and vegetables to restaurants, cafes and bars across Melbourne.

Homicide investigators say they still do not know why a group of killers targeted Melbourne fruiterer Paul Virgona with a spray of bullets as he drove to work early Saturday morning.

Mr Virgona's body was found by police inside a white van just outside EastLink's Mullum Mullum tunnel in Donvale about 2:20am on Saturday.

On Saturday, police said they believed a group of people were behind the attack, with cars dumped at two separate locations nearby shortly afterwards.

Detective Sergeant Ricky Millar said on Sunday there was nothing in Mr Virgona's background that explained why he was targeted.

"Paul was definitely known to be a hard-working person," Sergeant Millar said.

"He was a dedicated family man and there's nothing as to indicate why this incident would have happened."

"Paul was engaged in the wholesale fruit and veggie market as a supplier. He had been for some time and he was actually on his way to work at that time."

When asked whether Mr Virgona was shot on the EastLink tollway or earlier in his journey, Sergeant Millar said that was still part of the police investigation.

He urged anyone who drove along Mount Dandenong Road in Croydon towards EastLink between 2:00am and 2:10am on Saturday to share any dashcam footage they had with Crime Stoppers.

He also called for anyone with information on "disputes, issues or threats" made against Mr Virgona, no matter how trivial, to come forward.

The ABC understands Mr Virgona worked at his family's business, Virgona's Fresh Produce, which is based in Thornbury and sells fruit and vegetables to restaurants and cafes.

He had also recently been brought on board for a coaching role with the under-19s team at the Croydon Football Club.

Club president Anthony Thompson said he had only known Mr Virgona for about a month, but the community was shocked by the news.

"We were just learning a fair bit about each other but he seemed like quite a nice guy, very into his family, loved his football," Mr Thompson said.
