Why was Donald Trump's Florida home raided by the FBI? The key facts as ex-President rages about 'siege'

Donald Trump's residence in Florida was raided by the FBI as part of an investigation into missing White House records.

The disgraced ex-President of the United States took to his own social media channel on Tuesday to blast the "assault" on his home in the Mar-a-Lago estate.

In a statement, Mr Trump wrote: "These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before."

However, the Department of Justice and the FBI are currently investigating whether Trump brought classified records from the White House to his Florida residence.

Trump said the residence was raided by the FBI, and that agents broke open a safe.

According to NBC, The National Archives and Records Administration in January 2022 retrieved 15 boxes of White House records that were sent to Mar-a-Lago. At that time, NARA said that all of those records should have been sent to the National Archives when Trump left office, as required by the Presidential Records Act.

If Trump is found to have concealed White House records, he could be in violation of the Presidential Records Act - if that is the case, it will cause major issues with plans for a potential run for re-election in 2024.

Mr Trump still contests the election result from November of 2020, which saw Joe Biden elected as the President.

Thousands of Trump supporters attempted to prevent the result from being ratified on January 6 of 2021, when they attacked the Capitol building in what is now known as the Capitol riots.

President Biden confirmed he had no prior knowledge of the raid on Trump's residence, with a White House spokesperson saying he learned of it from 'public reports'.
