Why Wales' team squad photos are so odd before Euro 2020 matches and how it started

The Wales squad have gained something of a reputation for eyebrow-raising pre-match photos.

The chaotic-looking team photos shot to prominence along with Wales' incredible tournament on the pitch out in France five years ago.

And they're still a thing now, as witnessed on Wednesday evening at Euro 2020 against Turkey. You can follow the match live here.

Back in Euro 2016, the summer of our lives in this corner of the world, Wales rode the crest of a wave all the way to the semi-finals, where they lost to a Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal, the eventual winners.

While they won the hearts of fans the world over for their bravery, tenacity and heart on the pitch, they also went viral on social media for the manner in which they posed for team photos before matches.

Eagle-eyed supporters picked up on the odd nature of Wales' team snaps, which included a lopsided number of players on one side and an imbalanced number of players in the top row compared to the bottom.

Well, the explanation is a lot simpler than you might think.

The Wales team, having seen a couple of pictures of themselves when they hadn't actively tried to skew the balance, acknowledged between themselves that they were just bad at having team photos.

However, after noticing that, a string of positive results followed.

Instead of addressing the issue and attempting to realign, Wales actually did the very opposite and exaggerated their bizarre photo setup.

In fact, as Joe Ledley told said back in 2016, it became something of a superstition and they have actively carried it on to this day.

“We were just not very good at them. At first, we didn’t look into it but then gradually a few photos got together and it was awful, so we just thought we may as well keep it the same," he said.

“It’s been lucky for us too. It’s not really superstitious but I don’t think we will have a proper photo.”

Jonny Williams corroborated Ledley’s claims, adding: “I wasn’t there at the last game, but it looked on the TV like it’s got worse. I’ve been involved in a couple but they were by accident, to be fair. I just don’t think we’re very good at them and now we’re just doing it for banter I think, but I don’t know how much further we can go....unless we leave Wayne Hennessey on his own at the back!

“Wayne would struggle to get down in the front, but he would still be taller than Joey Allen if even if he did. You can go further but let’s wait and see. We don’t practice. We just talk within the group and we decide what we’re going to do.”

Seeing as though the team have qualified for two major tournaments and achieved promotion in the Nations League since discovering the photo quirk, it seems to be working.

They will hope that luck will carry some weight once again this tournament, then, just as it did five years ago.
