Why volunteers will be planting thousands of wooden crosses in Gateshead park

Something special will be done in Gateshead to honour the memory of the hundreds of servicemen and women from the North, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Once again a Field of Remembrance will be planted in Gateshead's Saltwell Park with thousands of wooden crosses and other commemorative markers featuring the names of the brave fallen service men and women transforming the area into a monumental tribute to their sacrifice.

Crosses will be planted by volunteers including members of the Armed Forces and their families, The Royal British Legion, local volunteers and cadet forces.

It is Gateshead's special way of remembering those who gave their lives fighting for their country.

A dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday 3 November 2018 at 10.45am with a minute's silence being observed at 11am.

Members of the public are being encouraged to attend to pay their respects.

The help and support that the RBL provides to serving personnel and the families of our fallen does not just end when the wreathes are lain on Remembrance Sunday - they are there 365 days a year giving help and support wherever it is needed.

Nicola Meredith, Area Manager for The Royal British Legion in the North East, said: "We are proud to be working with Gateshead Council once again to host the Field of Remembrance.

"This year, we are asking people to remember together all those from different cultures and nationalities who have served and sacrificed in the British Armed Forces.

"Gateshead is a great example of a community joining together to remember the wide-ranging contributions people from all cultures and backgrounds have made through their service, particularly the close relationships the British Armed Forces has with partners from around the world including the Commonwealth, intelligence agencies, and allied countries."

This is the eighth year that Gateshead's Saltwell Park has had the honour of hosting the Field of Remembrance, the only event of its kind in the whole of Northern England.
