Why victory over Leeds United meant so much to Brighton boss Graham Potter

Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter was thrilled to see his battle-weary side beat a 'fresh' Leeds United team on Saturday afternoon.

Neal Maupay's first-half goal was enough to seal the points for the Seagulls as they won their first Premier League match since November and condemn Marcelo Bielsa's side to a third straight defeat.

This was the Potters' side's third match in six days which included an a penalty shootout win at Newport in the FA Cup on Sunday and a narrow defeat away to Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

Why are Leeds struggling going forward?

Bielsa was able to bring back a number of first-team players into his starting XI after resting several key men in last weekend's FA Cup defeat at Crawley, only for the Whites to produce another uninspiring display.

"I'm very proud of the players. It was a tremendous effort after a really tough, good week," Potter said following the 1-0 victory.

"I think we played 120 minutes at Newport on a difficult pitch, had a long trip, to recover, played Man City on Wednesday and then to come here against a Leeds team that's quite fresh and has got the physicality and the attacking intent, to keep a clean sheet, to restrict them to not too many chances and score a good goal, I couldn't be happier for the players.

"They've been fantastic, great character, great personality and quality as well."

Next up for Brighton is a FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Blackpool on Saturday, while Leeds face a ten-day wait for their next match, when they visit Newcastle United on January 26.

Leeds were due to play Southampton on Tuesday evening, but that match was postponed so that Saints can play their rearranged FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town, who have been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak.
