Why Victor Lindelof started ahead of Eric Bailly for Manchester United vs Man City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Eric Bailly will be back in the Manchester United team soon enough, but backed Victor Lindelof as the better partner for Harry Maguire in the Carabao Cup sem-final.

Bailly's run of four successive starts comes to an end against Manchester City, with Lindelof straight back into the side on his return from a back injury.

That is one of two changes from the side that beat Aston Villa on New Year's Day, with Dean Henderson starting in place of David de Gea in goal.

“We’ve had a few days of rest and preparation training for this game so I didn’t feel the need to make too many changes," Solskjaer said of his team selection.

"I felt the team against Aston Villa played quite well and Dean has played well in this tournament and Victor and Harry have been working well together.

“Eric has played four games now on the trot and he’ll keep on playing, but tonight was one for Harry and Victor."

Henderson is making his sixth start for United this season but it's his Old Trafford debut and Solskjaer revealed how he'd taken extra steps to be ready for the occasion.

“He’s been looking forward to playing at this ground for many, many years and it’s finally happened," Solskjaer said. "He’s prepared well and has been training on the pitch just to get his surroundings and get his bearings which is brilliant preparation."
