Why Victor Lindelof is not in Manchester United squad vs Newcastle

Victor Lindelof picked up a back injury against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night and that is why he is not in the Manchester United squad to face Newcastle.

Axel Tuanzebe starts in his place at St James' Park alongside Harry Maguire, with Solskjaer making six changes to the team that drew a blank in The Hague.

"That's injuries," Solskjaer explained to MUTV when asked about Lindelof's absence from the matchday 18. "Victor and Jesse [Lingard] got injuries against Alkmaar on that pitch."

Solskjaer added to Sky Sports: "It was his (Lindelof's) back that locked in the last few minutes. We hoped he was going to recover, he actually travelled here today."

Continuing his interview with MUTV, Solskjaer said: "Paul [Pogba] obviously didn't travel. So we've just got more concerns on the injury front but that doesn't matter now, we've got 11 out there who have been playing together. Diogo [Dalot] is new, did well against Alkmaar and he'll be better for the 90 minutes.

"When you're a Man United player we expect them to have the mentality of, 'I'm going to prove that I should be in the team' and Diogo and Fred have shown before their qualities. Of course they've had a couple of games now in Europe and the Carabao Cup so I expect them to be fit."

United team vs Newcastle
