Why VAR was not used for Joel Matip decision as BT Sport pundits think Liverpool deserved penalty

Liverpool were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty during Saturday's clash against Newcastle .

The Reds were trailing 1-0 to a stunning strike by Jetro Willems when Joel Matip was wrestled to the ground by Jamaal Lascelles.

Liverpool defender Matip appealed for a spot kick but referee Andre Marriner waved away appeals and decided not to use VAR.

“It’s a subjective decision,” explained former Premier League referee Peter Walter, speaking on BT Sport.

“But down the Kop end? [Yes] I would have given it.”

Co-commentator and ex-Anfield favourite Steve McManaman agreed, saying: “Yes there’s contact. You can clearly see there’s contact.”

Sadio Mane hauled Liverpool level with a fine curling effort and they took the lead five minutes before half-time, with a huge touch of fortune about the goal.

Roberto Firmino, just on for the injured Divock Origi, threaded the ball through to Mane but the forward required a rebound off keeper Martin Dubravka onto his shins before tapping in his second goal from close range.
