Why VAR did not get involved in 'handball' claim in build-up to Youri Tielemans winner v Chelsea

VAR denied Chelsea an FA Cup final lifeline against Leicester City - after its use was completely overlooked during the build-up to a winner from Youri Tielemans.

In a Wembley showpiece that featured limited clear-cut chances, Leicester won the world-famous competition for the first time in their 137-year history this afternoon.

Tielemans netted a stunning, long-range winner for the Foxes shortly after the hour-mark.

As the game headed into added time, Chelsea thought they had equalised when substitute Ben Chilwell found the net against his former club - having been omitted by head coach Thomas Tuchel prior to kick-off.

However, the England defender saw that effort overturned by the finest of offside margins.

At the other end, the much-maligned video replay system didn't intervene in the build-up to Tielemans picking the ball up and firing past Kepa Arrizabalaga from 25 yards.

Reece James' attempted clearance inside his own half hit the leg of Ayoze Perez and bounced up, clipping his arm and diverting the ball away. His Belgian teammate was then able to cut loose.

However, former Premier League referee Peter Walton supported a 'good use of VAR' on this occasion.

In his role as an expert analyst for BT Sport, Walton said: "It's a subjective viewpoint whether or not it's handball. Personally, I don't think it was a handball. The ball has deflected off his [Perez] knee and just caught his arm.

"Now that, in itself, people might argue is handball. I don't think it was.

"However, VAR would not have got involved in the incident, because the goalscoring opportunity did not occur immediately after there was a potential handball.

"There were 7 seconds or so between that potential handball and the ball hitting the back of the net. That's not immediately and the law states it's only an offence if a goalscoring opportunity happens immediately. Good use of VAR."
