Why Tyler Roberts' training return has impressed his Leeds United teammates

Adam Forshaw has given a timely update on Tyler Roberts' impressive performances in training after Leeds United saw Jean-Kevin Augustin hit by another injury.

January signing Augustin had worked his way back to full fitness during the lockdown following a hamstring problem, but is now being assessed by the club's medical staff after suffering a setback.

With just ten days until Leeds are back in action at Cardiff City on June 21, the club are awaiting news on the severity of Augustin's latest issue, with his chances of appearing in south Wales slim.

The Frenchman was brought in as cover and competition for Patrick Bamford in the January transfer window, but has been restricted to just 49 minutes of football in three substitute appearances so far for Leeds.

The role of Bamford's back-up in the short-term now is likely to fall to Wales international Roberts, who has been turning heads since the club returned to training at Thorp Arch last month.

“Condition-wise Tyler Roberts looks in great nick, great shape," Forshaw told the Leeds That podcast when asked which players had impressed most upon their return.

“I spoke to Stu Dallas and I’d seen Tyler getting into his car and he looked lean and well, bubbly. Stu said he's been so sharp in training."

Roberts signed for Leeds in January 2018, but an injury in his first training session with the club meant he did not make his debut until August.

Injuries have continued to hamper his first-team opportunities, but a two-goal showing off the bench against Hull City in Leeds' penultimate match before the lockdown showed what he is capable of.

Forshaw, however, is convinced of his talents and the role he can play in the upcoming nine-match sprint to the finish.

“He’s got some ability Tyler. He’s been unfortunate with injuries but he could play a key part couldn’t he in the last nine games?"

“He’s a nice footballer. I think now he’s getting fully accustomed to the regime, what the demands are of the sessions are and the way the manager wants you to play.

“Hopefully I think his body is ready for it now.”
