Why two MPs were seen begging on their knees in the House of Commons

  • Two Members of Parliament, Sir Edward Leigh and Martin Vickers, knelt in the House of Commons to implore transport ministers for a direct railway link between London and Grimsby.
  • Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that trains could operate on the route without major infrastructure changes, but additional funding would be necessary for new stopping patterns.
  • Ms Alexander also noted that significant upgrades would be required at Market Rasen station for LNER services to include a stop there.
  • Sir Edward Leigh, a Conservative MP, highlighted his years of campaigning for the direct London service, emphasising the local community's strong desire for it.
  • Martin Vickers questioned why LNER, despite being in public ownership, has not provided the service and referenced an application by Grand Central for a similar route, which is awaiting a decision from the Office of Rail and Road.
