Why two Australian states have made public transport free

  • The governments of Tasmania and Victoria have made public transport free from this week to alleviate cost-of-living pressures caused by rising fuel prices.
  • Tasmania's public transport, including buses and ferries, and Victoria's will be free until 1 July.
  • The decision aims to help residents cope with increased fuel costs, which have surged globally following the US and Israel-led war against Iran.
  • Commuters in Tasmania are expected to save between A$20 and A$88 a week as a result of the free public transport initiative.
  • However, New South Wales and Western Australia have declined to implement similar measures, with NSW saying it would not “go down the path of free public transport”.
