Why Trent Alexander-Arnold started in midfield for England vs Andorra

Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson started for England in their World Cup qualifier against Andorra.

The Three Lions beat Hungary 4-0 on Thursday night and the Liverpool captain was an 88th minute substitute, whilst Alexander-Arnold was unused.

On Sunday, both lined up for Gareth Southgate's side at Wembley and Alexander-Arnold started in midfield.

Despite being regarded by many as one of the best attacking full-backs in the game, there has been desire for some time to see the 22-year-old further up the pitch.

Southgate explained his decision to play him in midfield to ITV: “We know that he is an outstanding footballer - we’ve wanted to have a look at him in a midfield position for a while.

"He is fabulous with the ball. Today is an opportunity. He’s got to play the role his own way..

“We want him to play the role his own way, we’re happy for him to drift out wide and deliver those killer balls.

“This season at club level with Harvey Elliott he’s been interchanging quite a lot in the middle.”

Alexander-Arnold has not played in midfield consistently since his academy days and moved back to defence after just 45 minutes against Andorra.

There's plenty of debate over whether he should switch to midfield permanently now he's an established first team player.

But, the argument remains that he's already one of the best in the world in his position and is redefining the full-back role.

One thing is certain, the versatility will only be a positive for both England and Liverpool.
