Why trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport are cancelled or delayed this morning

Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport have been cancelled or delayed this morning due to a 'trespass incident'.

In a tweet, Northern Rail said the line was blocked due to trespassers on the railway.

This means train services are either being cancelled or delayed.

The tweet posted by the Northern Rail official account at 8.35am said: "Due to a trespass incident between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport the line is blocked.

"Train services running to and from this station will be cancelled or delayed.

"Disruption is expected until 09:30 18/10."

More information was posted to the Northern website.

Bosses said 'due to a trespass incident between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport, Manchester Airport, Hadfield and Sheffield via New Mills Central, all trains are currently unable to move'.

British Transport Police are working to 'apprehend the assailant', the website added.

The disruption is expected to go on until around 9.30am.
