Why traffic was so bad in Bristol this morning and First Bus services were delayed

There was traffic chaos across Bristol this morning (September 12) which caused much of the city to become gridlocked.

As well as hold-ups in and around the city centre , there was congestion on the M4 and M32 motorways earlier today.

First Bus apologised for the delays while many commuters vented their frustration on Twitter .

Becky Smith said: "Why is Bristol traffic so bad this week? A 20 minute drive is taking 1.5 hours."

A number of incidents contributed to the heavy traffic many motorists suffered throughout today.

A crash on the ring road  sparked long delays in the area while an emergency service incident also saw roads closed in the city centre.

The rainy weather earlier likely played a part too. Whenever it rains we see more traffic on the roads, and more people using buses instead of walking or cycling to work.

Thankfully, the weather is due to get better, with  a mini heatwave predicted for the end of the week .

There will also be  road closures in Bristol this weekend for the Simplyhealth  Great Bristol Half Marathon .
