Why Tim Sherwood's unimaginative Leeds United criticism was so far off the mark

Tim Sherwood trotted out a familiar criticism of Leeds United on Amazon's pre-match build-up to the Whites' game against Newcastle United.

At the start of each of Marcelo Bielsa's three seasons in charge of the Whites, there have been pundits lining up to predict that his players will run out of steam towards the end of the season.

After promotion to the Premier League, plenty of apparent experts were keen to argue that the hectic nature of this season, alongside the added skill level of top-tier football, will make it difficult for Leeds to maintain their high-intensity style all season.

Yet Sherwood's argument that the Whites have run out of steam already this season will still have raised plenty of eyebrows.

Speaking about Leeds' recent mixed form, Sherwood pointed to the defeat against West Ham as evidence of players struggling for energy.

"When I was watching the West Ham game, towards the end, dare I say it: they got a little bit tired towards the end of the game and they’re the fittest team in the league," he said.

"They have such a tempo all of the time, I’m unsure whether they’ve burned a gasket here.

"He likes to have them on the front foot, he likes them to run harder than any other team, he expects that. Bielsa has been a breath of fresh air since he’s come to the Premier League.

"From the moment they came into the Premier League, they played at the home of the champions, Liverpool, and took them on toe-to-toe."

As Leeds' big win over Newcastle showed, though, Bielsa's side are not running out of steam just yet.

Instead, as research from Leeds Live recently showed, teams have instead been matching the Whites in terms of ground covered per game.

Chelsea, for example, ran more than 3km further in their win over Leeds than they had in any fixture for the previous month - something that was bemoaned post-match at Stamford Bridge by Bielsa.

He said: "In this game Chelsea produced their best game in terms of physical data. It’s not they improved just a little bit, they increased about 20 per cent in all their physical aspects.

"For us, from a physical standpoint, we played our second-best game of the season."

Meanwhile, the West Ham game referenced by Sherwood saw David Moyes' side run 2.5km further than they had in any of their previous 11 fixtures.

It shows that, whilst the Whites are not running out of steam, their impressively-high energy levels are starting to be matched by opponents.

As the victory over Newcastle proves, though, if teams are unable to up their fitness rates, they will be punished and overrun.
