Why three huge military aircraft flew over Bristol

Three military aircraft have been spotted flying over the city with reports of sightings in Brislington and St George areas.

The footage was captured by Joe Hillier who saw the planes speeding through the evening skies at around 9:15 pm on Thursday (June 23).

A Ministry of Defence (MoD )spokesperson told Bristol Live: "I can confirm that the aircraft spotted were taking part in a routine training exercise from RNAS Yeovilton."

One witness said: "Three very large very noisy military helicopters have just flown over together Brentry heading south over Bristol."

It's believed they were Merlin HM Mk2 helicopters. In July 2020, the Merlin HM2 and HC4/4A helicopters were planned to be in service until 2029 and 2030, respectively. On 11 June 2021, it was confirmed that their Out of Service Date (OSD) had been moved to 2040.
