Why thousands of Leeds and York people won't be able to use the Help to Buy scheme

People looking to move into their dream home could see their dreams scuppered under new government proposals, according to reports.

The Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme, which was launched to help people get onto the property ladder, sees the government lend up to £600,000 to first-time buyers or existing homeowners looking to buy a newly-built home.

It allows people to borrow 20 per cent interest-free for the first five years - as long as you have at least a five per cent deposit.

However, The Sun reports that price caps are coming into place which could hit would-be buyers in a number of UK cities - including Leeds and York.

It is alleged that new regional maximum property prices will be set in towns and cities that are rapidly growing.

Analysis from Flatfair suggests that the average price of a new-build property in Leeds currently stands at £242,963 - almost £15,000 above the Yorkshire cap of £228,100 that is said to be coming into place.

In York, there will be a staggering £100,000 gap between the average price of a new-build property (£326,662) and the proposed new regional cap (£228,100).

There are also claims that the scheme will only apply to first-time buyers from April next year, meaning current homeowners will no longer be able to take advantage of the scheme.

There are just seven towns and cities set to be hit by the harsh new restrictions - although most are in the south of England.

Bath, Cambridge, Coventry, Northampton and Warwick make up the rest of the list.
