Why this predictable Raiders’ TD was particularly sweet for Jon Gruden

The Los Angeles Chargers totally should have seen this play-call coming.

If there’s one thing you should know about Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden, it’s that his favorite play is Spider-2 Y-Banana. So, of course, he used that play to score a touchdown on Thursday Night Football against the Chargers.

When Gruden was the host of ESPN’s “QB Camp,” he would rant and rave about the play, most famously discussing it in his session with quarterback Andrew Luck. The play starts in a green right strong slot formation. Basically, there are two backs (a RB and a FB) with two receivers (both on the left side of the formation) and with a tight end (on right side of the formation). In a perfect world, the quarterback can find the fullback in the flat for an easy gain.

That’s exactly what happened on Thursday, with quarterback Derek Carr finding fullback Alec Ingold for a 3-yard touchdown. Gruden has probably never been so proud of his team.

I’ll tell you what, man, that was a thing of beauty.

Knock on wood if you’re with me.
