Last chance to vote in Newcastle United Supporters Trust elections

The Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) board elections close at midnight on Wednesday.

With discontent over the future of the club, Mike Ashley’s ownership and the ongoing controversy over the Strawberry Place development, the NUST has arguably never been more important to United supporters.

A strong and accountable supporters organisation is critical to trying to move the dial on what feels like a very important moment in the club’s history, with crowds dwindling and enthusiasm draining from the fanbase.

In the coming months they are set to take up Ashley’s offer of a trawl through Newcastle’s historic accounts and will hold meetings with the club’s hierarchy – something the Premier League requires the Magpies to do.

The elections needed a strong showing from members and 3,000 have voted already through an online ballot which has been emailed to all members. Nine candidates are standing for three positions on the board – with an announcement set for Friday on who has been successful.

A Special General Meeting will be held on Friday at 7pm. The location is the Lecture Theatre 2 in the Herschel Building of the Newcastle University – with an expectation that the NUST will announce some future plans as they incorporate new board members into the organisation.

For those members yet to vote, it’s worth noting that an engaged membership is further proof to the Premier League and the club that the organisation has support and the leadership required to speak on behalf of fans.

So while all of this might feel like small beer, they are the sort of baby steps that are required to make the longer leaps towards a changed football club.
