Why this enormous ship was sailing past Mumbles at the weekend

A huge vessel turned a few heads when it was spotted sailing past Mumbles Head at the weekend.

There was a fair amount of speculation about what the cargo might be.

Some people on social media suggested it might be dropping off much-needed hand sanitiser and toilet rolls after coronavirus panic-buying hit the UK and emptied shelves.

Others, rather less tongue in cheek, thought it might be shipping iron ore or coal to Port Talbot steelworks.

The ship, called the New Elias, is a bulk carrier which weighs a massive 88,955 tonnes, nearly twice as much as the ill-fated Titanic passenger ship which sank in 1912.

The images were taken from someone's front room in West Cross (Ceri Hurlow)

Registered in Panama, it dwarfed Mumbles Lighthouse and pier as it cruised past on Sunday, February 8.

The ship was built in Shanghai, China, in 2007, and is owned by NYK Line, a company based in Tokyo.

The images showing the scale of the huge vessel were taken by Ceri Hurlow from his West Cross home.

"I took the photo from my living room window. It's not unusual to see large ships off the Mumbles but this ship caught my eye as it seemed to be much bigger than usual," he said.

"It seemed to swallow up the Mumbles as it went past, even though it was more than two miles away."

This massive, weird ship was spotted off the coast of Swansea

After sailing from the Norweigan port of Narvik, it dropped its cargo in Port Talbot over the weekend.

The New Elias is now bound for Quebec, a journey of almost 3,000 miles, where it is expected to arrive on March 17.

On Monday afternoon, it was logged as heading out into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland.

A spokesman for Tata Steel in Port Talbot said a vessel of this size docking there was highly likely to be bringing raw materials to the steelworks, although it could not confirm what the exact cargo of the New Elias was.
