Why this Dean Smith Aston Villa revelation may be good news to Bristol City

Dean Smith has laid out Aston Villa's transfer criteria - and it could be good news for Bristol City.

Villa are keen on signing Adam Webster for the Robins, and have already had a £12m bid knocked back.

The Robins have slapped a £30m price tag on their key asset - but Villa are confident they can come to an agreement.

However, after signing Matt Targett from Southampton, Smith revealed Villa's transfer plans, and there is one key area mentioned where Webster would not fit the bill.

He said to AVFC.co.uk: "He fits our criteria of being a young player with experience of playing in the Premier League and having the potential to develop further.

"He will help make us a stronger defensive unit and we are all looking forward to working with him."

Webster does not have any Premier League experience and, at 25, it would be left up to interpretation as to whether Smith would consider him a young player.

However, as demonstrated by his season at the Robins, Webster certainly has the potential to develop further.

Whether Smith's words give any insight into their chase for Webster is up for debate, but it is certainly interesting to compare Villa's transfer criteria to the defender.
