Why Thiago Silva was not in Frank Lampard's Chelsea squad vs Sevilla

Chelsea were back in Champions League action tonight as they took on Sevilla in the penultimate Group E match.

However, one key player who was not part of the matchday squad was centre-back Thiago Silva.

The 36-year-old has been a massive positive for the Blues since he came into the side this summer on a free transfer.

Thiago Silva has been a rock at the back with Kurt Zouma as a centre-back partnership, and that will likely continue on Saturday when the Premier League returns.

However, Frank Lampard has made the decision just to rest the Brazilian for the game against the Spaniards, and he is not on the injury list.

The veteran centre-back is set to return for the match against Leeds United on Saturday, trying to continue their good run of form in the top four.

At the game in the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, Lampard went with a centre-back partnership of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

It was another blow to Fikayo Tomori, who had to be on the bench and has slipped down to the number five position in the role.

He is likely to move out on loan when the January transfer window opens next month, having turned down the chance to join West Ham for the campaign during the summer.

But Chelsea fans who are worried that Thiago Silva has picked up a knock should not be concerned.
