Why these knitted figures are cropping up around Burry Port harbour

Residents of Burry Port and Pembrey in Llanelli have added a bit of colour to their local community by decorating their harbour in yarn bombing to brighten it up.

A small newly-formed group of knitters and crocheters from Pembrey and Burry Port called Balls of Fun were meeting weekly at The Red Lion Pembrey before the coronavirus pandemic began.

The group are calling out to the community to help them do some yarn bombing in the towns of Pembrey and Burry Port to bring a positive display to the area coming out of coronavirus restrictions.

Sharron Thomas, who is a member of Balls of Fun, says a seaside scene was suggested for the harbour area in Burry Port to brighten it up.

With support from the town council the group are encouraging the community to get involved and start knitting. They hope the display will be up throughout the summer and local people and those visiting the area can enjoy it.

Sharron said:" People have been dropping multicolored scarves and other items to my doorstep for some weeks and and I passed them onto our group member Katrina to sew together. Yesterday we were thrilled to make a start, there will be more added hopefully in the next few days and we have a sea life display.

"Burry Port is celebrating being the town of culture this year and we thought this would fit in well. We've had a very positive response and people passing yesterday were thrilled to see it. Most excited were the youngsters and it was lovely to chat to them."

The group says that everyone is welcome to add anything they make to the displays and they hope it brings a smile to all who see it.
