Why there will be no Boxing Day Premier League football shown on BT Sport or Sky Sports this year

Sky Sports and BT Sport subscribers face a blank Boxing Day in the Premier League with Amazon Prime set to screen all 10 top flight games in the coming season.

The Premier League fixtures will be released on Thursday when dates for all 380 games will be announced.

And with Amazon streaming 20 games after securing one of the lucrative packages for around £90million, fans who want to watch the Boxing Day action will have to subscribe to Amazon Prime through the online streaming service, with the matches unavailable elsewhere.

As well as all 10 matches on Boxing Day, Amazon secured the rights to show every game from the first round of midweek fixtures in December, as part of its three-year agreement.

The Premier League made the final package of 20 games available to tempt the likes of Google, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Facebook and Apple to make a bid.

Only Amazon, who have an estimated 100million Prime subscribers worldwide, took the plunge.

Fans who want to watch the games shown by Amazon will need to obtain a Prime membership, which costs £79 a year or £7.99 a month.

Amazon Prime already broadcasts the US Open tennis, ATP World Tour tennis events, NFL games and is looking to break into football.

Sky Sports will screen 32 matches on Saturdays at 5.30pm and a further eight at 7.45pm, 32 matches on Sundays at 2pm, with an additional 32 on Sundays at 4.30pm.

On top of that, Sky will also show 24 matches on Mondays or Fridays at 8pm.

BT Sport will show 32 matches in Saturdays at 12.30pm, as well as an additional 20 matches from two midweek fixture programmes.

The new season kicks off on August 10 and concludes on May 17, 2020.
