Why there was a large emergency services presence on the Downs today

Emergency services were called to the Downs over a concern for the welfare of a woman this afternoon (May 1).

Nine police vehicles, four fire engines, two ambulance service vehicles and a rope access team attended the Downs shortly after 3.30pm.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokeswoman said: "An area was cordoned off while emergency services worked to resolve the situation safely.

"The woman, who was unharmed, was taken into the care of mental health services just before 5pm and the road was reopened."

Missing from the Bristol area in April 2019 - have you seen any of these people?

What can you do if you feel you are in crisis?

Most people who are thinking of taking their own life have shown warning signs beforehand.

These can include becoming depressed, showing sudden changes in behaviour, talking about wanting to die and feelings of hopelessness.

These feelings do improve and can be treated.

If you are concerned about someone, or need help yourself, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123.
