Why there was a heavy police presence and huge motorcade in Edinburgh on Tuesday

Locals were left a little confused on Tuesday after spotting a large police motorcade travelling through the city.

A "security car" and six police motorcycle outriders were spotted travelling from Edinburgh Airport through the city centre.

One man correctly guessed the reason for the police activity after spotting it on Tuesday afternoon - that it was for a visit from the Royal Family.

Princess Anne had arrived in Edinburgh to visit George Watson's School in the city to officially open the independent school's new junior building.

The visit marked 88 years to the day her Great Uncle, HRH Prince George, The Duke of Kent, opened buildings at Colinton Road.

School principal Melvyn Roffe, said: “It was an honour to welcome Her Royal Highness back to Watson’s and we are grateful for her continued interest in our school.

“It was particularly fitting that she was able to visit us to open our newest building on the anniversary of the opening of our original buildings on this site by her Great Uncle, HRH Prince George, exactly 88 years ago.

“So much has changed in that time but the school’s commitment to providing the best possible education for children and young people remains undiminished.”

The new building was named after former pupil John Martin, left a generous legacy to George Watson’s College which made a significant contribution towards the extension of the Junior School building, the school said.
