Why there's a large emergency service presence at the BRI today

Passers-by should not be alarmed by the high number of firefighters at the Bristol Royal Infirmary this morning (Friday, May 24)  - it is all part of a training exercise.

Emergency service teams will be leading NHS staff through procedures to follow if there is a fire on the rooftop helipad of the hospital.

The exercise will not affect the running of the hospital or any of the emergency services involved, according to the NHS, and if the helipad is needed it will be available as normal.

No fire alarms are planned as part of the exercise - which runs from 10am until 12pm - so if an alarm does sound, it should be treated as real.
