Why there isn't a full Premiership fixture card today as Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen get rare weekend off

It's hard not to cherish the things that have remained with many pre-pandemic joys temporarily taken away.

Yes, the new normal has been tough to adapt to but at least we've had Scottish football to keep us entertained during a time unlike any other.

But football followers aren't getting the full show this weekend with only two matches taking place in the Scottish Premiership today.

That's not to say there's nothing to look forward to as Hamilton visit Livingston and Ross County host Hibs with plenty to play for at both ends of the table.

But eight teams are able to rest up in a season that has barely paused for breath. The two games taking place today allow every side to reach 32 fixtures before next weekend's pre-split drama.

And Steven Gerrard and his Rangers side won't be complaining about the respite as they gear up for their monumental Europa League last 16 second leg with Slavia Prague with the tie poised at 1-1.

Interim Aberdeen manager Paul Sheerin will be hoping to use the extra time to get his side roaring before the return to action against Dundee United next weekend.

It's a similar case for John Kennedy who will be determined his Celtic side can make the most of the extra time to prepare before they welcome Rangers to Parkhead on March 21.

The down time is due to the revised Scottish Cup schedule with the quarter-finals originally pencilled in for this weekend.

The famous old trophy will be played for this season with teams fulfilling their third round ties on April 3 with three more rounds to follow before the Final on May 22.

There's plenty to get excited about in the Championship as well with four fixtures for supporters to enjoy.
