Why there is a police cordon on the Harbourside tonight

Part of Bristol's Harbourside remains cordoned off this evening, hours after a chemical spill.

An area near Merchants Quay was blocked off shortly after midday today (July 28) following a chemical spill, believed to be from a nearby building site.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary officers are manning the cordon, ahead of the arrival of a specialist clean up crew coordinated by Bristol City Council and the fire service.

A spokesperson from Avon Fire and Rescue Service was not able to comment on the exact nature of the spillage, nor how hazardous the material itself is to the public, however they did confirm the cordon remains in place to ensure the safety of those passing through the area.

The spokesperson said: "Emergency services were called shortly after 12pm today to reports of a spillage from a building site in the Merchants Quay area.

"Three fire crews - from Southmead, Avonmouth, and Bedmister - attended the incident, alongside an environmental response unit vehicle from Patchway.

"The specialist clean-up crew are expected to arrive within the next few hours, during which the cordon will remain in place."
