Why there has been a late refereeing change for Bristol City's clash with Cardiff City

The chances of an avalanche of yellow cards in Sunday's Severnside Derby between Bristol City and Cardiff City has decreased slightly by the appointment of Tony Harrington to the contest.

Harrington has replaced Oliver Langford who had been confirmed by the EFL earlier this week but has withdrawn from the contest due to a "personal matter".

The EFL confirmed the switch to Bristol Live which could have a slight bearing of the overall dynamic of the contest given the record of the respective referees.

Whereas Langford has dished out 41 yellow cards in nine Championship games this season - at an average of 4.5 per game - plus two reds, Harrington has been more reluctant to put his hand in his pocket.

The Cleveland-based referee has cautioned 20 players over his nine Championship matches - 2.2 per game; he also holds some significance to Bristol City as he took charge of their match against Swansea at Ashton Gate on September 21.

One of his 30 yellow cards was to Taylor Moore for an overzealous challenge in the first-half of the 0-0 draw a decision Swansea manager Steve Cooper felt was a red card, especially after left-back Jake Bidwell was dismissed for a similar tackle in the closing stages of the game.

Robins fans will also note the presence of Keith Stroud as fourth official. Stroud has been particularly unpopular among City supporters down the years following a series of decisions against their team.

City have collectively received 25 yellow cards and one read this season, while Cardiff players have been cautioned 23 times with one dismissal - both among the lowest in the Championship.

The Bluebirds, however, are in the league's top 10 sides for fouls per game with 13.3, while the Robins are towards the bottom averaging just 10.7.
