Normally, you’re used to a Monday Night Football doubleheader in Week 1. But that didn’t happen last week.
Now, you’ve got two MNF games in Week 2: Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills starts at 7:15 PM ET on ESPN, and the Minnesota Vikings visit the Philadelphia Eagles, which starts at 8:30 PM ET on ABC.
That’s right, it’s a doubleheader that will overlap.
What’s the deal here? And how will you be able to see both at the same time?
(I mean, you could go two screens! But we’ll dive into how there might be opportunities to see both.)
Per ESPN, here’s why this is happening:
The two games with staggered starts and overlapping action is an added component of ESPN’s growing NFL rights portfolio. Beginning with the 2023 season when the new media agreement begins, Disney will have three multi-game Monday Night Football weeks each season. As a result of the additional MNF games, a game exclusively presented on ESPN+ and the Week 18 doubleheader, ESPN will have 23 regular season games each year beginning in 2023.
So how will you be able to watch both? There will be some double-box moments, there will be throws to Scott Van Pelt, who will show highlights from the other game, and halftime of each game will provide some looks at the one you’re not watching.
