Why there are no World Cup games on TV today and when do they return?

We're still less than three weeks into the 2022 World Cup and it's already hard to remember a time where football wasn't shown on our TVs all day, every day.

It's been wall-to-wall action since the tournament kicked off in Qatar on November 20 and fans have hardly had time to breathe in between games, which have delivered stunning goals, tense knockouts and shock results.

But there has to be a break at some point, and with the quarter-final fixtures now decided, supporters may be wondering whether we are still going to be treated to at least a game a day. Here's everything you need to know.

Are there any World Cup matches being played on Wednesday?

After 17 days of wall-to-wall football action, we've got used to having a game shown on our screens every few hours.

While there were four matches a day during the group stages and two fixtures a day in the round of 16, there are no games being played on Wednesday, December 7 - the first day there has been no action in Qatar.

To make matters worse for football fans, there also won't be any matches played on Thursday, December 8, either.

When is the football set to return?

Fear not, you will only have to go a couple of days without football before the World Cup is back on our screens.

The action gets back under way on Friday, December 9, as the final eight teams in the competition battle it out in the quarter-finals.

The full list of fixtures and dates is as follows:

Croatia v Brazil - Friday, December 9 - 3pm

Netherlands v Argentina - Friday, December 9 - 7pm

Morocco v Portugal - Saturday, December 10 - 3pm

England v France - Saturday, December 10 - 7pm

Where can I watch the quarter-finals?

As has been the case throughout the tournament, viewers in the UK can watch all the World Cup fixtures either on BBC or ITV, with the broadcasters generally taking it in turns to show games. However, at the quarter-final stage, the BBC is showing the majority of the matches.

Croatia v Brazil and Netherlands v Argentina will both be shown live on BBC One on Friday, with coverage starting at 2.30pm and 6.15pm respectively.

Meanwhile ITV will show Saturday's quarter-final between Morocco v Portugal, with coverage beginning at 2.30pm, as well as England's clash with France later that day with coverage starting at 6pm.
