Why there are loads more police officers in Stockport town centre today

There will be more police officers than usual on patrol in Stockport town centre today.

The public are being advised not to be alarmed if they notice the heightened police presence though.

It has all been planned as part of an operation to clamp down on theft.

Sharing details on social media, officers explained that the public have no reason to be worried if they see more police than they were expecting - unless they are planning to steal something.

They also invited shoppers to come over and say hello if they see them out and about.

In a post, officers wrote: "You may notice there are quite a few more police officers on foot in Stockport town centre today than usual.

"Please don't be alarmed by this (unless you're a shoplifter) as the officers are part of an operation specifically focusing on theft.

"Feel free to stop and say hello".
