Why the Wembley big screen was mocking Alan Shearer's Newcastle record before the FA Cup final

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was jokingly mocked by the BBC ahead of the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Watford at Wembley.

Pep Guardiola's side are looking to become the first side in the men's game to win a domestic treble in English football, while the Hornets are seeking to lift the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

Newcastle, unfortunately, saw their FA Cup campaign end prematurely after losing in the fourth round to Javi Gracia's side but Shearer was flying the flag for Tyneside on pundit duty.

At the start of their build up for the final, the BBC hijacked Wembley's giant screens to display a message mocking the Newcastle icon - pointing out that he has never won the FA Cup.

It was all laughs in the studio, where Shearer's record in the FA Cup was a running joke this season. His co-hosts, of course, have both won it before.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright lifted two FA Cup trophies during his career, while Gary Lineker won the honour on the other side of north London in 1991 with Tottenham Hotspur.

Shearer, meanwhile, lost back-to-back FA Cup finals with Newcastle in 1998 and 1999, against Wright's Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.
