Why the posts at Welsh rugby's Judgement Day are lighting up green and red

A brand new rugby innovation designed by a Welshman is being trialled at Judgement Day kick-off times for Cardiff Blues vs Ospreys and Dragons vs Scarlets, TV channel and stream details

The new technology allows rugby posts to light up either green or red to indicate when a kick is successful or not and it is being used for the first time in the UK during the Judgement Day opener between the Dragons and Scarlets.

Followers of Wales centre Jamie Roberts on Twitter might have seen the 94-cap international tweeting a video of some goalposts lighting up green after a successful conversion at the Hong Kong Sevens earlier this month.

And that design is the brainchild of Roberts' school friend Michael Press, Managing Director of Goal Light Tech.

The idea is to provide a clearer visual aid for supporters - increasing the sporting experience and fan engagement within the event.

"GLT is a technology company that has been formed to provide a unique innovative technology service by illuminating multi sports field goal posts," Press told WalesOnline.

"We deliver a compelling product that enhances the experience of the in stadium spectator and broadcast audience.

“After meeting with World Rugby last year and having almost a year testing they finally approved us to launch at the HSBC World Sevens in Hong Kong."

And after a successful trial on the Sevens circuit, it will be used for the first time in the UK during the two Judgement Day clashes; Dragons vs Scarlets and Cardiff Blues vs Ospreys.

So how does it work?

"It works using a simple remote control activated manually from a staff member behind the advertising boards.

"We are an extension of the Assistant referees decision to give the entire stadium the same experience of a kick being successful or not.

An automated system could be developed in the future, but World Rugby's preferred method of operation is a manual one taking cues from the assistant referees.

You'd be forgiven for think that such technology would require specially-made posts, but that isn't the case.

"We have a wrap that is used to cover the posts so it will fit over most professional Rugby goal posts."

Moving forward, there is the possibility of turning the post into an LED screen of sorts, giving the opportunity to generate team and sponsor colors as well as other effects. That feature of the second generation system was developed by Press and Technical Director Pete Elvin.
